ANN Conference 2005

On Friday, starting at noon will be conference registration and check in, a welcome reception at 4:30pm, followed by Dinner.

On Sunday will be the General ANN meeting, followed by a business meeting for the newly elected Board of Directors.

Throughout the session will be plenty of time to interact with adults with nystagmus, and other parents whose children have nystagmus.

8:00-9:00am Dr. Rebecca Kammer

The Low Vision Exam
Dr. Rebecca Kammer will be our presenter for the low vision exam session and will be demonstrating what happens in the low vision exam for conference attendees. Dr. Kammer is an assistant professor at the Southern California College of Optometry.

9:10-10:10 Dr. Bill Takeshita
(Session 1)

Assistive Technology

Dr.Takeshita’s  session will be about assistive technology for those with low vision.  Dr. Takeshita is a developmental optometrist who specializes in vision therapy and low vision and is currently the Director of Optometric Services at the Center for the Partially Sighted in Los Angeles.

Educational Implications of Nystagmus

Dr. Takeshita’s second session will be on the educational implications for children with Nystagmus where he will explain how Nystagmus affects a child’s performance in the classroom and will give strategies and recommendations to help them.
 
Dr. Ian Bailey

Bioptic Driving
 

Dr. Bailey is our presenter for the Bioptic Driving Session. Dr. Bailey is a professor of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley and has many years of experience fitting and prescribing bioptic lenses. Dr. Bailey is also a veteran lecturer and researcher on low vision

Dr. Vicky Leung

Vision Therapy

Dr. Leung is our presenter for the Vision Therapy session. Dr. Leung is an optometrist who researched the efficacy of vision therapy for patients with Nystagmus while in Optometry school and continues to perform vision therapy in her private practice as well as treating patients with Nystagmus.
Dr. Olfat Mohamed

Balance Issues

Dr. Mohamed will be presenting an interactive session on balance for those with Nystagmus. Dr. Mohamed is professor of Physical Therapy at California State-Long Beach

Keynote Speakers

Both of these doctors have been keynote presenters at previous ANN conferences but this is the first time they will be presenting together for us. Their presentation will focus on Nystagmus research, new treatments on the horizon, as well as what can be expected from the surgical options available.

Shirley Kirk

IEP's
 

Shirley Kirk is the Coordinator of the Visually Impaired Program for the Los Angeles Unified School District and has over 30 years of experience working with the visually impaired. Shirley’s session will help parents and caregivers of children with Nystagmus understand the ideology behind the IEP and will share tips to help you make sure your child receives the accommodations they need.

Living With Nystagmus in the Working World

Two of our own members, will be speaking on being a person with Nystagmus in the career world. Both of our speakers have distinguished careers in their respective fields and will offer practical and motivational guidance in dealing with the challenges present in the working world.
